Smart Moves, Why Learning is Not All in Your Head, Carla Hannaford, Ph.D.
(Great River Books, 2009) Very readable investigation into how the body supports learning and thinking. Details both childhood development and ongoing adult integration of body/mind development.

Coming to our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D (Hyperion, 2005). Poetically written and thorough treatise on the importance of present-moment awareness. Includes lots of information about body/brain interactions and the role of the senses.

The Trance of Scarcity: Hey, Stop Holding Your Breath and Start Living Your Life, Victoria Castle (Sagacious Press, 2006). Illuminating and welcoming approach to the subjects of body awareness, somatics, and how to bring more ease and joy into your life.

Games for Actors and Non-Actors, Augusto Boal (Routledge, 1992) Classic text from a major theatre director, writer, theorist and teacher. Gives history of the development of his work with actors and non-actors, along with a rich resource of games and activities.

A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers will Rule the Future, Daniel H. Pink (Riverhead Books, 2005, 2006). By the author of “Free Agent Nation,” the book explores the rise of new competencies in the workplace, including design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning.

Flow: the Psychology of Optimum Experience, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (Harper and Row, 1990) Classic text on the nature of optimum experiences and the conditions that give rise to them. Includes explorations of the body in flow, creativity, and sense of time.

Your Life as Art, Robert Fritz (Newfane Press, 2003) Fritz applies the artistic process to other fields of human endeavor, illustrating the artist’s approach to dealing with structures and patterns leads to more effective creating.
